Painting by Simran Gleason

Since I was a kid, music has been a world of wonder and exploration. My path has wound through many ways of playing and listening - old and new, solo and collaborative. I studied classical guitar in college with Gerald Klickstein, Aaron Shearer, and Josh Brown, and received a classical guitar performance degree in 2001 from North Carolina School of the Arts. In 2003, I moved to the Caribbean, where I taught at the St. Lucia School of Music for two years, while performing regularly in jazz and reggae settings. I spent most of the next decade in the Bay Area, where I performed and composed for varied projects, ranging from jazz and rock to collaborations with dance and installation art. While there, I furthered my jazz studies with Brian Pardo, Steve Erquiaga, and Wil Blades. I have been in Portland, OR since 2014, where I have enjoyed performances and collaborations with funk and samba bands, a West African inspired trio, and theater pit bands. Through all of my wanderings, teaching has been a thread and an outlet for the exchange of musical ideas.
